Our Story
Coro Mundi began as the Orvieto Festival Choir, formed for a 2018 residency in Orvieto, Italy that brought together singers from Milan, London, Zurich, Sydney, and throughout the United States. Over nine days, in collaboration with the Orvieto Festival of Strings, the choir performed to enthusiastic audiences in the historic Duomo di Orvieto, in Acquapendente, and at the Preggio Music Festival.
Because most of the 50 singers were former students of conductor Stephen Kushner, the choir quickly settled into a familiar, focused and intensive rehearsal process. For many, it felt like a return to their musical home. It was from this reconnection and powerful music-making experience that Coro Mundi was born.
Plans were well underway for a residency in Montecatini, Italy, in the summer of 2020 when the pandemic brought everything to a halt.
In 2021, determined to persevere, twenty of the choir’s most accomplished singers—vaccine cards and COVID tests in hand—ventured to the small barrier island of Stone Harbor, New Jersey for our first post-pandemic retreat and concert. Our final concert in Philadelphia was greeted by a near-capacity, mask-wearing audience eager to experience live music again.
In the years that followed, Coro Mundi continued to thrive through residencies and performances in the United States, nurturing its distinctive blend of artistry, friendship, and shared purpose. The group has evolved to include professional and amateur singers from across the globe who aspire to music-making at the highest level while also cherishing the community we have built together.
In 2025, the ensemble once again traveled abroad—this time to Iceland—marking a joyful renewal of its international spirit. Looking ahead, Coro Mundi remains dedicated to exploring new places, new sounds, and new collaborations that reflect the ensemble’s enduring spirit of curiosity and connection.
